Worth taking the tent?
We have a tent that we bought a while back, and while it's been built twice - indoors - it's never actually been used. Would we still have to get it cleaned?

We had used our outside, just cleaned them thoroughly and no issues when we came three plus years ago!

What things are inspected for is any signs of life - spider webs, live spiders, insects, eggs, chrysalises, creepy crawlies, then anything that is likely to have been outdoors may have mud on it which can carry seeds and/or microbes. If your unused tent is obviously pristine, with no sign of any of the above, it will be fine. If it picked up anything (e.g. cobwebs) when erected indoors, make sure you get rid of them.

We brought ours two years ago, and it had been used many times outdoors. We just gave it a very good vacuum and wash before we came.

We brought ours too, and it had been used outside quite a few times. I made sure it was vacuumed thoroughly and any dirt sponged off (don't use Jeyes Fluid!!!) - great fun vacuuming an 8 man tent in a small dining room ...

Okay, so it's not as bad as I thought. Thanks everyone!

Buying a new tent in NZ is probably pretty pricey....another incentive to clean the old one.
