An application is referred to the IPG when the person comes from or has lived in a country where there has been unrest, repression, etc.. NZ wants to investigate to make sure that no immigrant has been personally involved in or responsible for such things. There is NO publicly available information about exactly what checks the IPG does. It seems likely that they have to communicate with organizations within the foreign country, and will have to wait for replies. Hence there is no way to tell how long the checks will take, but it IS a longer process. This is an old thread I remember that has some shared experience. http://www.enz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30638

And yes, the CO tells you if your case has to be referred to IPG.
