Our house is wood frame with brick facade. The brick has no structural use so I am not at all concerned about it in an earthquake other than it making a big mess when it falls down!

I'm very glad that the building codes are good on this. So it's probably just the really old charming brick villas that I should try not to fall in love with.

I think insulation and double glazing, perhaps a bit of radiant floor heat and well all be toasty warm, no matter what the contruction.

You could retrofit to make an old brick building safer, but that means money.

NZ building codes are pretty strict on seismic provisions almost to the point of paranoia but not everything else is taken to the same extent. With the exception of unreinforced load bearing brickwork or blockwork buildings most other types of buildings buildings built in the UK would be equally seismically resistant if not more so than here.

Not all the seismic engineering specialists are in agreement on how it should be done or to what extent. What they all seem to be in agreement on though is that if you live in a house in the valleys above wellington you'd better enjoy white water rafting in your intact house down a mudslide, sold the big one strike.

    Jon!
Glad to see you back! How is Waiheke? Are you by chance building a house? Or do you work in the field? Thank you for all the information on what to expect.
Give us an update on yourself when you have a moment.
