I'm here on work visa as a full-time web developer. Back in the US, I was freelancing. If one of my old clients from overseas needs something done, am I legally allowed to perform that service and take payment?

Just a thought... do you have a partner on a partnership work visa in NZ? If so, your partner can do this. I don't think INZ would mind too much if you are working for an overseas client and getting paid overseas, but I haven't had to deal with this one before, so I can't be 100%.
That's funny. The immigration officer today asked me the same question. A partner sure would make things easier!
I'm quite surprised, too, but it sounds like the moment you provide work in exchange for money for anyone but the employer listed on your visa, you're partaking in self-employment, which is in conflict with a work visa. Seems odd, because you'd think they'd welcome the extra tax revenue, right?
