Default Can resident pursue PhD studies rather than doing job?

    Hi all,

I have been approved for SMC "resident" in principle two months back. I am planning to fly to NZ in sept first week. However, I have recently get a PhD offer to be started Feburary 2015 in one of newzealand university. In this context, is it ok that I start the proposed PhD which will take 3-4 years. Or, is there any other obligations of SMC "resident" status holder to be limited to skilled job rather than study? Please suggest me.

    Best Regards,

    Martin

Once you have Residence, as long as it doesn't have any conditions (which would be printed on the visa itself), you are entitled to do whatever you want within the law, including being a student. You are only likely to have any conditions on your visa if you got some of your points by having a job offer in NZ.
