    Default Baggage Allowance

    Hi
Flying from the UK to NZ and was wondering how folk handled luggage? We'll have a container but want to bring enough gear to keep us going until the container arrives. We are 2 adults and 2 kids: 2 and 3. Would we each be allowed 2 large suitcases plus 1 hand-luggage? And can you bring a large pram too?

    Cheers

Luggage allowances vary with the airline - you'll need to look at the website for the one you're intending to use. It's also worth phoning the company to check whether they have any concession for migrants (people using their Residence visa for the first time) - some do, some don't, and it can be very worth having. If someone tells you 'yes' on the phone when you're booking, ask them to enter the concession into the system, AND ALSO send you a letter, or an email you can print off, to show at check-in, as there have been instances where the clerk couldn't trace any record of the promised allowance and wanted to apply the normal limits.

There are lots of old threads about this. One important thing to remember is how you're going to get all these suitcases to and from the airport, particularly with small children.

    I recently emailed Singapore airlines about extra migrant baggage and this was their reply;

"Kindly note, if you hold an unused/unstamped/not validated migrant visa
that specifically states that you are permitted to remain in Australia /
New Zealand indefinitely / permanently for flights departing from
London/Manchester you will then be entitled to our migrant baggage
allowance (i.e. 40 kilos per seat paying passenger)

This baggage allowance will only be granted when you check in at the
airport when this visa is sighted and checked that it has also not been
travelled on before, this has to be the first time it is being used.

You can have as many items of checked luggage as you wish provided:
The total combined weight of all the items put together does not exceed
    your total checked allowances
No single item of baggage exceeds 32 kilos in weight, as a health and
    safety requirement
If you are not holding the correct visa mentioned above at check-in, then
you will be entitled to the standard free checked baggage allowance of 30
    kilos per seated passenger."

I thought this information might be useful to anyone who hasn't booked their flights yet.

We came with AirNZ last October and when booking a one way ticket - for another 75GBP - we were able to double our checked baggage allowance. If I remember rightly you don't see this option until you actually get into the booking process.

cheers - I got this reply to but an extra sentence to say that my carrier from Belfast to London - aerlingus would not honour the ongoing ticket allowance unless I had the tickets reissued for an extra 30 pounds each!!! Ridiculous. I've emailed my travel agent and see what they come up with.

    Hi,

We checked with Singapore Airlines(Information/Ticketing counter at Changi Airport) about migrant baggage allowance and unfortunately they said they don't have any such thing. Is there anyone travelled with SQA or any other airlines recently and got migrant baggage allowance? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Sala

I travelled by SQ on May and did not have any special baggage allowance. Prior to travel, I called the SQ customer services, and was advise the total package was 30 KG even if a person is holding a resident class.

We're flying with Singapore from the UK on Oct 1st and have an email from them confirming the 40kg allowance, similar to the one posted above. This was from enquiring at the UK end, and we've got unused PR visas. Needless to say we'll be printing it out and taking it with us just in case!
