    Default dogs and camping/holidays

    Hi folks,

I know this has been posted before I think by Jubjub? But does anyone have any info on a book or one stop resource on campsites that are dog friendly? I have been trawling through the general sites but it takes forever and there don't seem to be that many...surely NZ must have more animal friendly campsites?

    thanks.

    Sarah.

We had/have the same problem - I haven't come across a book like that yet, but it would be VERY handy if there is one. A lot of sites do seem to ban dogs - I guess it saves other campers from nuisance/noisy dogs. A couple of sites we have seen (Pigeon Bay on Banks Peninsula comes to mind) don't allow dogs and have a "cage" outside the camp gates in which you can house your dog - the "cage" was disgusting, rusty, damaged and sitting in a mud puddle - so I'd also check out any "facilities" that are listed for your dog before travelling.

We have found several motels and sites that do take dogs and so far they've been fab! You might find that getting a regular camping book and ringing up beforehand is best - some places don't openly advertise that dogs are welcome, but if you ask, and you can guarantee your pet will behave/sleep in the car then you might get a good response.

I also remember seeing something akin to a "pet passport" whereby if you stay with a dog at a camp site or motel/hotel and your pet behaves you get a "stamp" in the book which is recognised by other participants in the scheme... I'll try and find it again and post details.

Dunno if these are any use, I did have a good site where you could search by pet friendly for hotels/motels and campsites, but I cant find it.....
