Default Consequences for sponsors if sponsored person overstays

If a sponsor (who by signing the forms guaranteed they'd make sure the sponsored party left on time and if necessary pay for airfare)was fully aware that the person they sponsored was overstaying their visa by a considerable amount of time, what would happen to the sponsor? Obviously the overstayer would be liable for deportation and unable to reenter the country. But would the sponsors face any serious consequences?

    I found this. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...ponsorship.htm

I haven't heard of any cases like you describe on the forum here. It looks from that fact sheet as though the main call on the sponsor would be financial - ALL government costs that there could be in respect of the illegal overstayer, to be paid out of the sponsor's pocket. But it occurs to me that, particularly if the sponsor in question is an immigrant themself, they could have difficulty because they would have broken immigration law - that has an impact on future applications for visas.
