Default Need to book DOC sites during Christmas?

We are planning to go away with the camper van during the Christmas break and are looking for a DOC camp site. We live in the Wellington region and want to travel north, e.g. around Masterton, or Kapiti Coast, Palmy, etc. Everything within 4 hours drive would be acceptable.
Do we need to be afraid that DOC camp sites will be full?

Doc camp sites will be very busy if not full at that time of the year.
    This from their website

Bookings are required for all Serviced campsites and for some Scenic and Standard campsites in peak season (usually 1 October - 30 April).

We're not planning to go to a serviced campsite. Only basic/standard.

You can't book all DOC campsites. Some are first in, first served. Some DOC campsites are booked through private individuals that might run a shop or cafe near the campsite. DOC has an online booking system for the most popular areas. If you are off the beaten track, you should be able to find a DOC campground to stay in. You might want to call the DOC office in the areas you are staying and ask them which campgrounds don't fill up. Also check campsites that are run by district councils, they often have restrictions on nights allowed to stay so you might be able to squeeze in early in the morning.

Nothing more to add to what kiwieagle has said already, apart from we stayed at a DOC site which was near Mount Bruce (just north of Masterton) which was amazing!
