Haggling is a NZ custom, and you'll find details and experiences on many old threads. https://www.google.co.uk/#q=site:enz.org+haggling Here's my own personal best deal! http://www.enz.org/forum/showthread....390#post497390
From your realestate.co link, I assume you're talking about negotiating the rent on a house in Auckland - there is a lot of competition among tenants, so landlords probably won't be interested in haggling. Purchasing a property, yes, negotiation is expected.
Its natural to negotiate and one aspect you could possibly negotiate is by signing fixed term or long term contract. The landlord may prefer you in such a case as he won't have to go through real estate agency anytime soon. Do make sure you have a look at the property, check its condition and its worth the money you rent out for.
As Oregonkiwi says, its landlords market here in NZ so they get enough applications to choose these days.
Tenants are very competitive when it comes to a good house in Auckland. If you're not able to haggle the rent price, you can try asking for other things in the house.
