I can tell you, from my time working in recruiting in the United States, that if you're getting these questions from a recruiter don't worry overly much about saying just what you've been saying. Quite often these questions are used to discover which companies are hiring for which positions, giving the recruiter the opportunity to call the company and pitch their own services in filling the open job position. It's a bit sneaky and underhanded of the recruiter but I wouldn't give them any more information than you've been providing; that you just began applying, etc. Just remember, if they call and pitch their services for the open position knowing that the company has already spoken to you it won't be you they're suggesting for the position.
