Passengers commuting between Christchurch and Ashburton using train?

just wondering if it would be possible, in the next 50 years, to commute between these two places using train?

I mean, will the population and density support that to happen??

I don't think you're going to get an authoritative answer here - I doubt that an authoritative answer is even possible. The only official documents I could find about any plans for possible expansion of the railway network around Christchurch date from before the earthquake. The earthquake and the subsequent rebuild have necessarily totally altered everyone's way of thinking, and priorities.
