It is not essential to have an agent at all. Many people on the forum have completed the immigration process without using one. All the information you need is on the INZ website. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/
If you decide you want the help of an agent, the essential thing is that they MUST be licensed. This http://www.iaa.govt.nz/about/index.asp is the official body, and you can find the name of licensed agents there.
