Default Are there are any Business Analysts here?

Hi there, would be grateful to receive any insights and advice from successful BAs here. I have sent over 50 CVs and as a result there are only one interview, 4-5 phone calls and still silence. I have about 10 experience as BA, graduated from local uni, cool references, about a year of local experience as BA (I participated in startup during my study at uni). I would much appreciate any feedback, i.e. what to pay attention at, market insight, recruiters or direct employers, best time for job seeking, so everything would be interesting. Thanks a lot in advance, looking forward for some really cool advises.

This may seem harsh, but I mean it as genuine advice so please don't be offended!
Have you had someone proof-read your CV or any application letters? There are a few tiny mistakes in your English (advises for example, it is advice, not plural) which could be putting people off? Particularly if lots of people applying.
    Good luck!

    Hi,

I am BA too. Still in 'SMC residence visa' process though. I tried, briefly, applying to few jobs, etc. but there was absolutely no favorable response at all (even though the JD was line by line match).

So, I read NZ market in IT is quite small and difficult, to put it politely.

BA is an odd role in NZ. There are requirements for specialist BA roles for sure, but, generally, the BA market is over saturated unless you have a lot of experience, especially local, or, as above, required specialist.

I work with some business analysts, and it is a really personal industry. They have to put in a lot of time building connections with business owners, at the very least showing how they can make their lives easier.
If you're looking to gain more experience, you could always approach smaller businesses and offer a free assessment? Get some favourable feedback from business owners that you can include in your CV?

this is slightly old, so I hope you managed to get a BA job by now....
But I was surprised to learn that the BA role isn't particularly understood in NZ & this may be why you don't see the jobs. Also, there's a lot of people who think they can do the job of a BA but extracting business requirements from a client who doesn't know what they want is blooming difficult!
In NZ, it's not just the CV and experience that counts, the cover letter is almost more important. You have to make yourself stand above everyone else's.

I have to disagree with this... Having worked with (and occasionally as) BAs in North America (Toronto & New York), Europe (London & Paris) and APAC (Auckland & Sydney) with everything from SMEs to F5s -- including some of the largest companies in each region across various verticals including retail (B2B, B2C) and Public Sector -- the BA role is completely understood for the NZ market. I would suggest instead people don't particularly understand the BA role as required in NZ... One of the reasons local experience is so preferred in an over saturated market.

    Hi there,

My husband is also searching for a Junior BA/BA/System Analyst roles in New Zealand since one year now.
Currently, he is employed with accredited broadband company in New Zealand in a technical role but not BA.
He needs a valid BA role in NZ contract or permanent to have relevant job as per his previous experience for SMC application.

Request your assistance if you have any BA job vacancies for 6+ years experience candidate. Ready to relocate anywhere in NZ.
    Thank you in advance.

Have you thought of approaching some of the angel investors out there and asking them if you could assess some start up proposals for them?
    For example:

    http://www.enterpriseangels.co.nz/

I would suggest you offer to analyse one or two proposals on a trial basis for them and pitch it that if they like your work that they take you on as a regular job.
