Doing a little work for old UK employer while working for new NZ employer

It looks like I will get a job offer in NZ, but my old UK employer will probably ask me to do some paid consultancy to help during the change over. I might also do a week or so of work for them in NZ before the new job starts. Do the WTR and SMC visas allow this?

Residence under SMC, yes. WTR restricts you to working for the named employer. This man http://www.enz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41511, on a work visa, managed to get a variation of conditions to allow him to do two jobs.
