Can you travel to Australia on a residence visa?
My resident visa was recently APPROVED, now I'm just waiting for them to give me the letter to pay the migrant levy, and stamp the passport
Can I travel to Australia for a holiday on this stamp, or do I still need to get a travel visa?

Congrats! But no, you must apply for a visitor visa.
Only New Zealand citizen can travel to, live and work in Australia under Trans Tasman Travel Arrangement, not New Zealand permanent residents.
It also depends on your country of origin, for example, British, American, German citizens can also enter Australia with e-visitor or ETA visa, which wouldn't require paper application.
