Default The new points system for job offers outside Auckland region

I am sure those of you actively looking at SMC visas that include a job offer will know about the points increase from 10 to 30 for all skilled employment outside the Auckland region. However, do be careful that you read the new regulations carefully. If you get your SMC residence including these extra 30 points, you will need to stay outside Auckland region in skilled employment or 12 months. This does not mean you have to stay with the same employer but that if you do change jobs, the new job must also be in Skilled Employment as defined by INZ (Listed in Appendix 6 of the Operational Manual - see http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/35165.htm) for which you have the relevant qualifications and/or experience. So, you can't give up your job as an accountant or engineer and become a taxi driver no offence to taxi drivers , they're just not on the list! You will need to prove this when you ask for the section 49 conditions to be taken off your visa or when you apply for Permanent residence.

Its a good policy, NZ needs to spread the migrant load around the country, although 30 points doesn't seem like a lot.

I agree that this is a good policy for New Zealand and for many would-be migrants. There is just that potential pitfall that may not be obvious at first glance. At resent, once you have been in the job that got you your SMC for 3 months, you can do more or less what you want job-wise. Now, if you have been awarded the 30 points for being outside of Auckland, you are going to be in a difficult situation of you hate that job or for some reason your employment ends before 12 months is up. So long as you can find another skilled job outside the Auckland region, you will be fine.
