Hi,
I applied for a student visa two days before my open work visa expired as per my immigration adviser's advice. The problem is i have just received an automated mail from the immigration saying they received my student visa application and no mention about interim visa?. Am i unlawful now? Will i be deported?

Don't get more worried than you have to. You said yourself - 'automated email'. It is a set form of words, so of course it isn't going to take account of each variation in every applicant's personal circumstances. Give it time for ALL INZ's systems to have caught up with what you are doing, then you will no doubt receive other notifications, or your adviser will. If you have done exactly what the adviser advised, then no, you are not illegal and you won't be deported.
