Default Dodgy Building Products in NZ

I thought some of you might find this article interesting. Buyer beware because the government has decided to let the market regulate itself:

I highly doubt it's a problem in NZ. In all the building sites i've been, sub-standard plumbing parts has never been an issue so I can't see this 50% claim that new houses have these plumbing parts. The issue is how do these specific parts perform? Should we go down the path that even nails and screws have to meet a standard because there are fake steel nails? I just don't see the temptation say in China to make plumbing parts that aren't what they are (ie brass or copper). What we're most likely seeing is NZ is getting building products that come from the same factory that make these parts for Australia but without the costly paperwork and compliance.

The mass amount of problems in building is poor workmanship. Rarely the fault of the product.

No it's not because we don't know how the mesh was tested and treated.

Why not pick on the labour and skill content in construction where most failures occur?
