Default bringing 125cc scooter to NZ

    Hi all,

I'll be coming to NZ in one form or another at the end of this year, or Jan 2017, and I've been wondering if I should bring my 125cc Suzuki scooter. It's not worth a lot, but is lots of fun to use and if I did then I wouldn't have to investigate getting a new one there. (Also, could be included in a container shipment at minimal extra cost - or at least that's what I imagine at this point.)

I have looked somewhat into the redtape but am not clear on it yet. How hard is it to get a motorcycle/scooter license in NZ? I imagine it's not as easy as where I currently am (S.Korea) where you can use a standard driver's license up to 125cc. Are there usual restrictions on what can be used and registered in NZ or not? Do you need a motorcycle license for anything with 2 wheels and a motor?

I imagine a few people might have imported cars here, but probably not bikes. Interested to hear if anyone has any experience

the limit for standard licences is 49cc so you would need a motorcycle licence in NZ

To ride a 125cc you will need at least a Learners motorbike license. Luckily for you its relatively easy to get one. You will need to do a Basic Handling Test (takes about half a day), and easy theory test.

Can you do the test on your own bike or at least another automatic if that's what you're used to? Broke my leg years ago and wouldn't be able to manage a manual

    I believe you can.

I know that the local scooter/bike store once offered me their 125cc manual so I can quickly pass the test. However, for the quickest advice, it would be best to go to somewhere like the Red Barron Bikes, or Scootling, or any other bike store that sells 125cc-250cc bikes. They will point you directly to a good testing facility, and may give you some extra local pointers.

You have to provide the vehicle you use for the test.
