Default Wellington Central: where to shop?

    Hi all,

Settling down and enjoying the laid back vibe in Wellington. Looking for recommendations on where to do grocery shopping? Stopped by Countdown today and it seems to stock lots of items, any other shops I should consider?

Lastly, any recommendations on a place to get some kitchenware? (Pots, plastic containers, etc)

    Thanks

    In general:

Buy 'specials' as often as possible. Normal prices are a rip-off here! Reasonable priced items without the tag 'special' are hard to find. Buy also anti-cyclic, buy your grill and plants in winter etc.
Use Trademe, buy at hospice shops - safe money.

Warehouse - Check 1st - many things are cheaper, no groceries though.
KMart - Not so bad for certain items, almost iike Warehouse
Briscoes - 40% off, 50% off, 60% off...lol...overpriced kitchenware reduced to normal prices.
Farmers - Like the place, nice personal, tidy, prices are ok, not too bad

    Food

Countdown - good selection of foods, nice personal, a bit pricey, don't like the veggie and fruit dep.
New World - almost the same as Countdown, but a bit more posh
Pack'n Safe - Good prices, nice selection of meats, veggies and fruits, sometimes overcrowded, you may miss particular items
Moore Wilsons - the best, if you can afford it - Lots of imported stuff, also good kitchen ware

Do not forget the smaller local places at the corner!

    Very personal list. Enjoy shopping!

    Great advice.

Also, look out for specialist fruit and vegetable shops or stalls, which are usually better quality and comparatively cheaper than buying those in supermarkets. Often, neighbours will put out a stall to sell or even give surplus from their gardens - keep an eye open.

Er, no... but it's worth noticing such stalls whenever you're out and about. Can save quite a lot, and the produce is straight out of the ground, rather than having gone into a central depot and then got distributed to shops several days later.

If you are lazy or have lots of steps(or both), countdown delivers groceries.
