Default Suitable Job- Work to Residence Visa

    Dear All,

I am writing behalf of my friend. He applied for SMC and got approved for Job search visa, now he would like to know, if he finds any job , can he convert his JSV to RV ? For instance some Volunteer , odd or anything except job in his own field. Please suggest. In short, is it should be Skilled Job offer or any job offer may help him to convert his JSV to RV ? Please share your experience.

    Thanks in advance.

He is allowed to do any work while on the JSV (to earn his living).

But in order to claim his Residence visa, he must get the offer of a skilled job in the same skill as he proved in his SMC application.

If an immigration officer assesses that a principal applicant has not demonstrated the ability to successfully settle and contribute but can realise their potential to successfully settle in and contribute to New Zealand the principal applicant will be eligible for the grant of a SMC job search work visa (subject to the requirements of WR5 being met) to enable them to realise their potential by obtaining an offer of skilled employment (see SM7) in New Zealand.

Skilled employment only qualifies for points if the employment is:
    ...
for a position that is paid by salary or wages or in terms of a contract for service (payment by commission and/or retainer are not acceptable)
So, no, volunteering does not meet the requirement.
