Default Partnership Work Visa Application while on interim visa

So my partner has been in NZ for nearly 6 months on a visitors visa. We applied for a partnership based work visa about 10 weeks ago but INZ wanted some extra medical checks done which seem to have come up clear. We are now waiting for the medical assessor to review the results and letter from the specialist. The problem I have is that her visitors visa expires next week. I understand that immigration will issue an interim visa while the application is pending. We are worried about what will happen if the work visa application is declined. Will she have to leave NZ immediately or does she have a few weeks?

Nothing happens in a click of the fingers. INZ are reasonable with people who are being reasonable towards them, so if things turned out badly, they would give her reasonable notice of when she must be gone before they would take action.
