Visa for wife - what conditions?

Hi,

I've got a PhD scholarship in NZ and applying for a visa now.

Can my wife apply for a visa as well or will she need to get into university or get a job to get the visa?

I mean, can she get a visa based on the fact that I got accepted at uni and (hopefully) will get a visa? I hope this makes sense.
