Question English Major Working as a Marketing Specialist

    Hello Everyone,
I have 4 questions that need your kind reply.

    1. With a Bachelor Degree in English, I'm holding a Silver Fern Job Search Visa, trying to find a skilled job, then applying for residency. I have just got an offer, working as a marketing specialist, which is on the skilled job list as indicated on INZ website. But now my biggest concern is that this job is not related to my qualification at all. In this case, am I still able to apply for Silver Fern Practical Experience Visa or go straight forward to SMC Visa?

    2. If the answer is "NO", as an English major, the only occupations I can take are translator and teacher, is this correct?

    3. I also heard a saying that, if you could get a managerial occupation, then your qualification does not have to be related to your job. Is this correct?

    4. What else can I do with my current offer if it can not lead me to a SFPE or SMC visa?

It's just such an awkward situation for me to find a job in NZ as an English Major, especially when the skilled job has to be related to my qualification. I just want to make sure if I'm heading the wrong way, trying to a marketing related job, which is not related to my qualification.

    Any reply would be appreciated!
    Thank you very much
    James

A major in english would indicate that your study related to communication. I'd say that it is a great match to a marketing specialist role. Generally the broader the degree, the less worry you need to have about relevance. its also what the employer considers is relevant that important.

    Hi Chris,

Sorry to bother you. I just called INZ to double check it. They reply was: I can still claim for points with my Bachelor degree of English for EOI, BUT I also need to have at least 5 years of experience related to the skilled job I'm being offered. The problem is that I do not have the experience. So there is situation: I can claim the points with my Bachelor degree in English, making it over 140 points. But they eventually will turn me down for not having relevant experience. There is just no point in doing that.

I also asked about the 2nd option, which is to apply for Silver Fern Practical Experience Visa with this skilled job offer as a marketing specialist. Their reply was your qualification does not have to be related to the skilled job if it's about Practical Experience Visa. Is is true?

If I can only get a 2-year practical experience visa with the current offer, when and how can I get the residency in the future? Should I give up this offer and keep searching for a job as a translator?

Please give me some advices. Thanks!

Nonsense. You have a degree which your employer considers relevant to your marketing role. (or else they would not have offered you the role). Marketing Specialists, as per ANZSCO require either a bachelors degree, OR 5 years of work experience can substitute for the qualification.

The employer offered me the job because I have 4 years of international marketing experience. But 4 is not 5, so it can not be used to substitute the qualification. I thought I only need to meet one of criteria, but it seems they need me to meet both. In other words, if qualification is not related to the skilled job, then it's useless for claiming points for EOI. But if I have 5 years of relevant experience, the qualification is still useless, cuz i wont need it to claim points any more.

Actually, the lady from INZ sounded very uncertain cuz she put me on hold for several times so that she can get the info somewhere.

I hope anyone with similar experience could help me out.

    Thanks.
