Family emergency please help

Hi,
My application for work visa is in process from 8 july, but I have got family emergency in India and I have to leave the country.Can I get my passport back and what happens with my current application?Please help.

Yes, you can ask them for your passport back.

If you will be back soon enough that your job offer still stands, they will probably continue processing your visa application once you are back in NZ. But if you are likely to be away for longer, so the employer can't hold the job offer open for you, you will have to withdraw the work visa application, because any Essential Skills visa is linked to one particular job.
