You are not the only person waiting around 12 months. INZ have got extremely busy during this last couple of years. I hope you get your answer soon.

I hope immigrants are allowed to accept their job offer and get settled while waiting for the SMC to process...? Are you and your partner/kids granted temporary visas while waiting for residency to be approved? It's not like you can hang around burning your savings that long...

If you get the offer of a skilled job, what most people do then is to apply for an Essential Skills visa https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...ills-work-visa, or a Talent (Accredited Employer) Work To Residence visa https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...residence-visa, at the same time as the application for Residence under SMC. Those temporary work visas can be processed much more quickly (around a month if all goes smoothly), so the person can be working in NZ while the SMC application ticks away in the background, taking as long as it takes. The temporary work visa gives them the right to support an application from their partner for a partner-sponsored temporary work visa https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...k-visa-holders or this https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...s-visitor-visa, and children can get student visas if of school age https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...d-student-visa, or visitors' visas if below school age https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...s-visitor-visa, matching the parents' for time, so the whole family is covered. (The family's visa applications can all be sent together with the worker's application for a temporary visa, linked with a covering letter, and it will all be worked as one case, with INZ supplying such things as the visa number, which you won't know at first, as it becomes available.)

Thank you for the clarification as always, JandM We found all these things on the website before, but it can be pretty difficult to figure out what the actually MEAN when the rubber meets the road. It looks like partners are not supposed to work while on a partner-sponsored temporary visa...(fine by me, hehe)...and it lasts as long as your partner's work visa. That should suffice.
