    Default Case officer assigned?

Just a quick question. I handed my partnership residence application in this Monday, today an officer called one of my references who wrote a witness statement for me. Does this mean I have a case officer already? I know they don't always introduce themselves to you. Fee was taken same day as handing it in and status changed from submitted to pending when I look online.

There's no way to tell from what you have said. Any application is routinely checked over by clerks upon lodgement, looking to see that there is evidence with it to support everything claimed. One of those clerks might have called your referee to check something not directly to do with the case, such as what is his full address. But probably only a CO would be asking about the facts in his letter. It remains to be seen - good luck.
