Thumbs up Opinion article - attitudes towards immigration

I thought this was a nice middle-of-of-the-road article by a Kiwi who moved to NZ as a child.

The immigration changes have been getting a LOT of coverage in local media, with plenty of differing opinions, eg

Maybe they should introduce a "New Zealand Values" test, much like Australia did recently. They did it for citizenshp; we should do it for PR.

    My 2 cents -

We've had enough of diplomatic and middle ground articles. We need someone strong to step up and say yay or nay. As the article says - immigration is dealing with actual people, not a commodity.

Someone needs to either lay down the welcome mat or pull up the whole ladder. Right now the mat's out and the ladder is partially up - only those who can jump high enough (or stand on a pile of cash 3 stories high) can come in. So either lower the ladder and lead the world or shut shop and stop wooing prospective "high-skilled" (read rich in wealth, knowledge or experience) immigration because that ain't gonna happen.

Problem is that the guy who stands up one way or another has to provide REASON for his decision and PROPAGANDA for his decision since nobody seems to give a bleep about actual numbers anyway. Its not an easy decision by any means - but one that needs to be made if this debate is going to end.
