Default Changing Employer on Essential work visa and current visa expiring soon

    Hello!

My partners Essential skill work visa is expiring at the beginning of October so he planned on applying for a new one soon. But now he got offered a new job at a different company (still in Auckland, and same position). He has a 1 month notice period at his current job. How should he proceed? Apply for Variation of conditions first? Can he hand in his resignation at the same time or must he wait until VOC is accepted? Can he apply for a VOC and new Work visa at the same time, since it is expiring soon?

Any help will be much appreciated

He mustn't resign from his present job until he has a definite start date AND visa for the new job in place, because his present visa depends on the job. As soon as he brings that job to an end, the visa also ends, and that would leave him illegally in New Zealand. Therefore, he needs to get in touch with INZ, and go through all the details with them about notice period/start date, VOC, new visa, etc.. They are very good about co-ordinating the changeover of visa with the changeover of job
