    Default Resident to Permanent resident

    Hi,

As per the NZ website, we need to hold the resident visa for 2 years and also there is mentioned in condition where we need to spend 184 days per year for 2 years to apply for PR.

My first year is completed and running the second year. Can i apply for PR once i finish 184 days i.e 6 months or i need to wait till the end of the 2nd year?

    Any ideas?

You need to wait until the completion of second year to apply. I recently got mine and i had to wait exactly 2 yrs since i entered the country back in 2016.

    Cheers.

you can obtain a Permanent Resident Visa if you:

have held your resident visa for at least two years
    , and
have met any conditions of your Resident Visa, and
have shown a commitment to New Zealand in one of the five ways that meet our requirements.
    (see the bolding)

Then, for commitment to NZ: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...zealand/slider

Just one last question. So my resident visa will expire on october 16 2019. When would be the ideal time to apply? I guess i don't have to wait till the visa finishes and apply for another TR and then apply for a PR

You resident visa will never expire while you are in New Zealand, but the travel conditions will.
You do not have to apply for a further resident visa unless you wish to travel. You cant apply until 16 October 2019 at the earliest.

Yes, travel "conditions" aren't really conditions at all, but the name given to permission to enter New Zealand as many times as the holder likes.

Does this mean that I can apply for PR if i'm outside of NZ meeting the condition of 184 days/year already spent in NZ and completed 24 months with the residency? I assume I do not have to be present in NZ soil just to apply for PR.

I'm planning to travel to visit my family around June so will stay them for some time.

RV2.5 How do resident visa holders or former holders qualify for a permanent resident visa?

Upon application principal applicants, except for those to whom RV2.10 applies, will be granted a permanent resident visa if:

    they either:
hold a resident visa, and have held that resident visa continuously for at least 24 months at the time of application; or
have held a resident visa in the three months before the application is made, and had held that resident visa continuously for at least 24 months before it expired (provided RV1.25 does not apply); and
their first day in New Zealand as a resident (R5.66.1) was at least 24 months before the application is made; and
they can demonstrate a commitment to New Zealand by meeting the requirements set out in any one of the five subsections below (RV2.5.1 to RV2.5.20); and
they have met any conditions imposed under section 49(1) or section 50 of the Immigration Act; and
they meet character requirements for residence (see A5).
