Some people have certainly deduced that INZ may have been drawing conclusions that weren't true about relationships. There's nothing to stop you spelling out the real situation in your case - it can't do any harm. I would suggest you state plainly, as well as your marital status, that the applicant you are sponsoring is a friend of your wife's.
