This https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visa...ng/transit-771 is the most recent page about the transit visa that I can find on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website, and it makes no mention of a time limit (though older, archived, pages did), and there is a link to this page https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visa...t-without-visa which lists those who would be exempt (and that includes New Zealand citizens, but not residents).

So it looks as though Australia has tightened up its requirements as of last year, and you will need a transit visa.

But don't take my word, or any other unofficial person's word for it. To be certain and to spare yourself any hassle on your journey, ask the Australians. https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/contact-us

If you hold Indian passport you need transit visa for Australia, it has nothing to do what class NZ visa you hold.

    See here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visa...t-without-visa

Certain passport holders can transit through Australia without holding a transit visa, provided that:

    • You arrive in Australia by aircraft
    • You have a confirmed ticket to leave Australia by aircraft within 8 hours of arriving
    • You have valid travel documents to enter your next destination
    • You do not need to clear immigration or leave airside areas except to continue your journey

As @mayur1980 has already mentioned, if you are travelling on an Indian passport, you need a transit visa: no exceptions apply. Unless you are an Indian official passport holder, you are not on the Australian transit visa "whitelist".

Also, keep in mind that while your New Zealand Residence Visa makes no difference as to whether or not you are exempt from an Australian Transit Visa, you will need to provide evidence of your New Zealand Resident Visa when applying for your Australian Transit Visa. You are required to provide proof that you can enter your ultimate destination, and if you cannot do this, your Transit Visa application will be declined.
