Default Private Invoicing w/o Business Number

    Hi all,

I have been looking around on the web and in here, but I cannot find an exact answer for my question:

Back in DE we can write GST free invoices w/o being registered as a business, when we do small jobs up to a certain amount.

Am I able to write a private invoice in NZ with my IRD for "mini jobs" I am doing [w/o GST of course] without having to register for a business number? Is there an income threshhold for that? Do I simply put that in my tax return at the end of the year?

Or do I have to get a business number (as a sole trader) as soon as I want to write an invoice?

    Thank you

    Yes.

$60,000 is the GST threshold https://www.business.govt.nz/tax-and...tax-types/gst/

Hey Oregonkiwi - thank you! That bit about the private invoices and the IRD really got me confused as I could only find online that you need a business number and then be a sole trader in order to write invoices in general. [I would want to avoid being a sole trader at the start before I am properly set up].
