    Exclamation my partner got a Phd admission from NZ University which I we have smc application in queue .

    Dear JandM , EGoodhue

    Could you please help me to clarify some concerns ;

    My SMC lodgment date 1-feb-2019 ;( offshore – with no job offer) still heard nothing from NZ . However, my partner got a Phd admission from NZ University; the start date is the first of June 2020;

    My questions are:
    1. Could she apply for nz student visa? ( this will cost us alot of money - we dont want to spend if we have no chance )
    2. Does the smc application make her subject to refusal of student visa?
    3. Could I apply for partner work visa based on my relationship with her? smc applicatin wil + / - the chances to get partner work visa ?

    Really appreciate any info that could help.

    1. Yes, if she and her course meet all the requirements. Check on the INZ factsheet (all tabs). https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...g-student-visa I know it's expensive, and more than it would be if the residence could have come through by then, but it may be the only way to start studying this year.
    2. No.
    3. Yes. https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...lders#criteria And no, the SMC application shouldn't affect your chances either way.

    Unlike other countries e.g. Australia, domestic and international students pay the same Universities fees for PhD studies in New Zealand. Being a resident or international student does not make much cost difference, plus scholarships are available. Some PhD offer full time working right too.

    Is the situation for doctorates different from the fees for lower degrees, then?

    Yes, mainly in two ways- fee as domestic students and eligible for full time work. https://www.studyinnewzealand.govt.n...s/phd-package/

    Auck Uni fees for e.g. says If you are a new international PhD student, you will pay the same annual tuition fee as New Zealand PhD students. The 2020 PhD tuition fee is NZ$7,250.40 per annum. In additional to the tuition fee, there is a Student Services Fee estimated at $943.20 for full-time study.

    My wife is studying PhD and we pay approx $ 7000 per year (for PhD only fee for domestic and international students is same). PhD student has full time work right for any employer and partner / spouse gets open work visa.
