The timings are really unpredictable at the moment - INZ have backlogs for SMC visas, and I think this is having a knock-on effect for other work also.

There is no need to rush. If you haven't heard anything when your present visa is nearing its end, then you can apply for another work visa, and as long as you do that while still covered by the present visa, INZ can issue an Interim visa that will keep you legal while processing happens. https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-...a/interim-visa

You can pretty much add coronavirus to the backlogs now. Apparently, the Beijing office processes the great majority of Visitor Visa applications (understandable, as most visitors come from China): with that office now closed indefinitely, that work is going to have to be reallocated elsewhere...

Oh interesting - I have exactly the same thing coming up: Will try to go for residency in a few weeks and was actually wondering if it is possible to apply for another partner work visa in case the residency is not approved on time. I take that as a yes. As the residency does not provide an interim, but the work visa does and you can keep working as well.

Fingers crossed you get the residency on time
