    Default Escalation for Electrical workers

    Hi everyone

I've been wondering. Although my job little is not Electrical Service Technician and my Anzsco code is not the specific one for Electrician, I do conduct maintenance and installations of electrical equipment that do fall under the scope of the Electrical Workers Registration Board, meaning that I need registration that I do have and this is in some of the core duties of my role.

I was wondering if there's someone here under similar circumstances that applied for visa escalation for residency and INZ said yes.

    Hi Frankgo,

What kind of maintenance and installation do you do?

    Hi Frankgo,

I have an EWRB electrician license and registration since 2019. Also I have applied to resident visa this year.

To help you I need to understand what exactly do you do. So, could you please be more specific about what you mean with electrical maintenance and installation?

My primary role is as product specialist and sales, but I also conduct the maintenance and installation of the equipment I sell, meaning I have to do troubleshooting and repairs in electrical systems (distribution boards, HV generators, power supplies, electric pumps, electromechanical systems, etc).

When we sell a new system, I am in charge of conducting the installation and connecting the system for the first time and doing the start up.

For doing this I hold a license from EWRB since 2017.

Probably same as you, prescribed electrical work is a big part of what I do and we need registration. Did you managed to get your application escalated successfully?

Ah ok now I understand what you mean. Sorry.

So I think we are in the same boat. I am a Mechatronic engineer but I need to use the EWRB license to have access to electrical panel once I do PLC programming and troubleshooting.

I sent the paper documents as an engineer to INZ and they arrived last Monday (18/05). Still waiting to be lodged.

I've replied to your email (as least, I assume it was you ) but will also post here, for the benefit of anyone else looking for a similar answer.

INZ will only prioritise allocation of SMC applications where the applicant has registration if the registration is required to do their job in NZ. That is, if the applicant is claiming one of the following occupations for skilled employment:
    Architect
    Barrister
    Barrister and solicitor
    Cable jointer
    Chiropractor
    Clinical dental technician
    Clinical dental therapist
    Dental hygienist
    Dental technician
    Dental therapist
    Dentist
    Dietitian
    Dispensing optician
    Electrician
    Electrical appliance serviceperson
    Electrical engineer
    Electrical inspector
    Electrical installer
    Electrical service technician
    Financial adviser
    Immigration adviser
    Line mechanic
    Medical laboratory scientist/technologist
    Medical laboratory technician
    Medical practitioner
    Medical radiation technologist
    Nurses and midwives
    Occupational therapist
    Optometrist
    Osteopath
    Pharmacist
    Physiotherapist
    Plumber, gasfitter and drainlayer
    Podiatrist
    Psychologist
    Real estate agent
    Cadastral (land title) surveyor
    Teacher
    Veterinarian

So, even though you might have registration from a registration authority, if you don't absolutely have to have that registration to do the core tasks of your job in NZ, INZ are highly unlikely to approve an escalation (in saying that, there's nothing to lose by asking - and you might get someone who isn't quite switched on answering your email and they might escalate you! Human error is rife at INZ sometimes...)

Wow I am surprised how big that list is. I had no idea. No wonder so many applications are being prioritized and the normal queue has been stuck for a year.

I should have become and real estate agent 😂
Annoyingly I do a lot involving cadastral I'm just not a surveyor that goes out and records it, I'm on the other end of the data coming in.

I can't believe real estate agents are on that list!
