    When you apply in person the case officer or admin person or whoever it is you talk to does a check of the documents you provide, as well as talking to you and therefor determining the level of English that is required. It probably just saves time.

    I reckon the online applications take longer to process because of identity checks. In case of face to face appointment, the identity is verified during the appointment.

    Citizenship Office has now added identity check feature to their online application system.
