No. There need to be five *successive* year-blocks, counting back from the date of application, when s/he was in the country for enough days. If s/he has one year-block that doesn't qualify, the years since residence before that will be "wasted" from the point of view of citizenship, and the application will have to wait longer. In your example, the applicant would first be able to apply in 2026 or 2027, depending on when s/he got back from the long trip in 2020/1, and assuming no long overseas visits after that.

• Period 2 (2020-04-15 to 2021-04-14): 365 days (no absence)
• Period 3 (2019-04-15 to 2020-04-14): 340 days (8 days absence between 2019-07-29 and 2019-08-07, 15 days absence between 2019-12-19 and 2020-01-04, 3 days absence between 2020-03-06 and 2020-03-10, all exclusive of arrival/departure dates, extra 1 day presence due to February 29th)
• Period 4 (2018-04-15 to 2019-04-14): 365 days (no absence)
• Period 5 (2017-04-15 to 2018-04-14): 269 days (41 days absence between 2017-12-19 and 2018-01-30 exclusive of arrival/departure dates; 55 days between 2017-04-15 and 2017-06-08 are ineligible)
• Total across all periods: 1,687 days

All five one-year periods are greater than 240 days, and the total across all five one-year periods is greater than 1,350 days. The statutory requirement is therefore met.

PR 11/11/2019 printed letter

So that’s first, which is correct ?

If I can apply before I go, is this allowed if you’ve applied to leave and come back, taking into the fact of covid etc, plan is back early November

If you leave the country after you've applied, it will make no difference as to whether or not you meet the presence requirement: presence is calculated from the date that the Department of Internal Affairs receives a completed application together with the required fee. However, such absence may adversely affect the assessment of whether or not you meet the intention to reside requirement, and you may be requested to provide additional evidence of your intention thereof.

Okay... looking back at your past posts, I see you were in NZ when your visa was granted, so it's the date on the visa in your passport that will count. (For someone who got Residence longer ago, when out of the country, their visa, though dated earlier, would not become 'live' till it was scanned at Immigration at the airport of arrival.)

Your counting of dates has to be BACKWARDS from the day you submit your application for citizenship (not forwards from the date residence was granted).
