Default Can you apply for citizenship before 5 years are up?

    Hi all,

Apologies if there's a sticky somewhere I've missed on this...

I've seen reference here and there I think to applying for citizenship before the 5 years of residence are up. I'm assuming it's something to do with only needing to be physically in NZ for part of each of those five years. Can someone clarify please?

I am Australia and moved to NZ on September 30 2017 (automatic residency on arrival). I became a permanent resident on 5 November 2019. I had assumed I would need to wait until October 2022 to apply for citizenship, but is that correct?

    Many thanks!

Use this tool. It will check with INZ database your eligibility as of today to apply for a citizenship.
