TIA
Some people on here have contacted them before for this reason.
There's two reasons I can think off the top of my head why this is necessary. The first is that it is a requirement to be granted citizenship that the applicant intend to keep living in New Zealand, and significant travel may adversely impact that assessment (though, in the circumstances you've described, I consider it unlikely that the Citizenship Office will find much issue). If you're honest and upfront about your travel plans, the worst that can happen is the application being declined for not meeting the intention to reside requirement If you're not, and the Citizenship Office finds out later, the consequences can be severe: prosecution under Section 27 of the Citizenship Act for providing false information, and/or deprivation of citizenship under Section 17 for the same. We had a situation here a while back where a poster clearly did not meet the intention to reside requirement (he stated that his entire purpose to gain citizenship was to relocate to Australia visa-free) and refused to listen to our warnings on the matter; I eventually ended up filing a police report...
The other reason, which is the one probably more important to you and your situation, is that you definitely do not want to be granted citizenship while abroad. This is less of an issue now that citizenship ceremonies have resumed than it was during Covid when the requirement to attend a ceremony was waived on public health grounds, but still worth mentioning. The issue here is that, when you become a New Zealand citizen, INZ must by law cancel your current visa, and that may leave you in a position where you are stuck overseas trying to obtain a New Zealand passport before being able to return. Notifying the Citizenship Office of your travel plans will avoid this situation, as they will allocate you to a citizenship ceremony (may be earlier than normal, may be later than normal) that does not clash with one of the overseas business trips: this would allow you to receive your citizenship certificate and obtain a New Zealand passport (even in an extreme scenario, for travel the next day by utilising the after hours call-out service) before any subsequent departure.
