    Default Wooden items.

Hope someone can give advice here.

We're heading back to NZ from the US soon with a container. We're using NZ Movers, so they'll be the agent for customs.

They've explained the whole 'manufactured wooden items' thing, so our furniture should be fine.

But we have a few carvings etc (ironically from NZ and Rarotonga). NZ Movers have said we should declare these.

Is there anything I need to know about this process? I presume it means they'll get examined and sprayed if required, but is there more to it?

    Thanks for any guidance.

MPI officials will examine them for any signs that they're carrying life of any sort into NZ. Being wood, a particular concern is any sort of woodworm or borer beetle - that's what they would spray for. Also, make sure you remove any earth or plant debris picked up if the carvings have been outside (microscopic organisms, and/or viable spores or seeds), and any cobwebs or insect eggs or chrysalises. (All that last part also goes for furniture and equipment, and also the treads of boots or shoes.) The better they can SEE you have taken care with cleaning (and a smell of disinfectant doesn't go amiss!), the less trouble you're likely to have.

Thank you! Do we have to ensure the declared items are separated from other goods and easily identifiable, so that MPI staff won’t be wasting time looking for them?
    Really great insights JandM, cheers.

Oh, yes - keep apart/pack separately and LABELLED anything that will need to be looked at. Some agencies charge by the hour for the time they're standing by while your goods are being checked! - and MPI will be well disposed towards you if you've made life as easy for them as you could.

I just thought, if you're bringing a vacuum cleaner, clean it to sparkling state, and disinfect it - it's a good and obvious indication of how careful you've been.
