Resident to Permanent Resident 2 year dates - from when?

Hello,

We were granted residency via the one-off 2021 residence visa category on the August 23rd 2022.
We can apply for PR after two years, and we have to be in NZ for six months of each of those two years.

I have been told that the date when they start counting those two years is the date we had been grated residency, not backdated two years from the date we apply for PR?
For instance we could apply for PR after 2 and a half years.
I was wanting clarity on this date.

Anyway, my main question and concern is on a different issue. we were overseas on the above date (August 23rd 2022) when we were granted residency and entered NZ on the first week of September (couple of weeks later), the same year.
Thus, I was wondering when they start counting the 2 years: the date on which we were granted residency, or the date on which we entered NZ?

One of the requirements to be granted a Permanent Resident Visa is that your first day as a resident must be at least 24 months before you make your application (RV2.5(b)).

Your first day as a resident, per RV5.66.5(b), is either:

1. the day your Resident Visa is granted in New Zealand; or
2. the day you were first granted entry permission on the basis of your Resident Visa, if you were outside of New Zealand when your Resident Visa was granted.

Therefore, if someone is outside New Zealand when their Resident Visa is granted, RV2.5(b) will only be met 24 months after that person first enters New Zealand holding that visa. You must meet all of RV2.5(a) to RV2.5(e) to be granted a Permanent Resident Visa.

Note, however, that while RV2.5(b) is counted forwards from a person's first day in New Zealand as a resident, if one intends to demonstrate a commitment to New Zealand by means of significant time spent in New Zealand (RV2.5.1), the time periods for this criteria are counted backwards from the date of application. Note the wording of RV2.5.1 stating "immediately preceding the date their application for a permanent resident visa was made". There is similar wording for the other four ways of demonstrating commitment: I'm only singling out the method of significant time spent in New Zealand as (on these forums, at least) that is the most popular method of demonstrating commitment and satisfying RV2.5(c).

I doubt that you've missed anything. That's not the ONLY date when you can apply. You can put in your application any time which is AT LEAST two years since you became a resident, and you meet all the other conditions.
