A child born outside New Zealand may be a citizen by descent at the time of birth: for this to apply, generally at least one parent must be a New Zealand citizen otherwise than by descent. Refer to
Section 7 of the Citizenship Act 1977.
If a child born outside New Zealand is not a citizen by descent, that child would need to obtain a residence class visa by any applicable pathway, then meet the criteria and apply for New Zealand citizenship by grant.
