Does anybody know if satellite navigation for cars, bought in the UK is of any use in NZ?
Thanks Steve

I doubt it very, very much. It's hard to get lost here anyway.
Dick Smith Electronics is the top retail electronics retail chain. You can see what maps are sold and if they match your kit.

As long as your current unit has the capability of uploading an NZ map you should be OK. What have you got?
Hadn't bought one yet but was very tempted and considering either one of the TomTom One or a MIO C250

Then I thought if it doesn't work in NZ for Auckland and Wellington or if of no value maybe I could live without!
Thanks
We have a NavMan which I believe is a NZ brand. NZ maps can be downloaded from their website - at a cost of £100 - so they must work there! As I'm spending £100 on the maps, they'd better!
GPS is global.... but the UK map won't be of much use in NZ!Originally Posted by SteveO
Try and get a New Zealand map for your device... that way you'll have roads etc on the map.

Hi there
You can get them here if you really need one, but has already been said its hard to get lost even in Auckland!!
Certainly wouldn't need one in Welly - its the size of Bournemouth!! People don't ask what suburb you live in round here but more like what street & what house!!
Maybe you'd use it in Auckers if you were doing a lot of journeys but I couldn't see anyone needing one anywhere else - there's really only 1 decent main motorway going up the whole country & places are very well signposted.
I heard a story about a tourist couple who used a sat nav system here & it took them up some pretty trecherous roads when there was a perfectly good road it omitted to direct them down - I wouldn't touch a Navman with a bargepole after that story - far too many dodgy roads in NZ - better off with a roadmap!

Here's a good site for NZ maps.. if you have a Garmin with mapsource on your Pc you can test the demo map on your PC.

Thanks for all your replies, that has clarified the matter for me, I will save my money and stick with a conventional map!
