Living in Havelock North

What were your reasons for emigrating?

To be honest, we moved here because of the work I was offered. That was the main reason. But other than that, the wife and I were also at looking at leaving Sydney. We were sick of living in a “ghetto” area. We could not let the kids go out by themselves and going out at night is a no no in the area we were in. I was sick of travelling 2 hours to work in traffic every single morning and could not move to near work as it was very expensive. We were also sick of people in my working area looking down their noses at us because of the area we lived in. We wanted to get out of Sydney!!!

What were your reasons for choosing New Zealand?

We were looking to move to Queensland to start with. The Gold Coast looked like an ideal location for the family. But I was offered a job over in New Zealand. I was a little hesitant to start with but we thought “why not?” so we made the move.

What differences have you noticed between your NZ town and your home town?

NO TRAFFIC! You can drive around Havelock North in the middle of the day and there are no traffic jams! Lovely. The people in this town are very friendly and aren’t out to get you. It’s very laid back compared to Sydney. I also let my children go out riding without fear of them being mugged or attacked.

What do you like best about New Zealand?

Safety, food, scenery, laid back lifestyle, people, the weather (chilly!), sports, nice parks and good postal service.

What don’t you like about New Zealand?

The beaches aren’t as good in my opinion over here although that is a matter of opinion. I sometimes think the place is a little boring as there aren’t really many people here compared to Sydney. The houses aren’t very well insulated here so it can be a little cool at times.

What do you miss from your home country?

Beaches, lots of things to do, family and Sydney Harbour.

How easily did you find work in New Zealand?

VERY easily. I was offered a job here so that’s the reason why we moved!

How does your working life in New Zealand compare with your previous work experiences?

The pay is less here but I’m much happier at work here because of the better and healthier lifestyle that I live.

How much do you plus partner earn in New Zealand:

We earn around $150000 a year combined.

How much did you pay for your house:

We actually got our house for free because of my job! Very happy about it.

How does your standard of living in New Zealand compare with your previous country?

Much better. A much nicer place to live than the dump we were in at Sydney.

How does your quality of life now compare with your previous country?

Much happier. Much better. Probably won’t move back to Sydney.

Do you have any other personal experiences or observations that would be useful for people considering immigrating to New Zealand?

Yes! Make sure you don’t say you support the Wallibies, because you’ll cause some trouble! haha.

Should I Move to New Zealand?

8 must-knows before you even THINK about moving to New Zealand
